Maple Syrup is a delicious, sweet syrup produced from the sap of maple trees. In colder regions, these trees accumulate starch in their trunks and roots prior to winter. As winter ends and spring begins, this starch transforms into sugar, which flows into the sap.

The Fifth Grade Ambassadors at Broad Street Elementary School take pride in serving their school through a variety of leadership roles. These scholars take on responsibilities that help the school run smoothly while also serving as role models for their peers.
At Broad Street Elementary School, Buddy Days have become a meaningful and engaging tradition that strengthens the school community. Once a month, classrooms pair up across grade levels to participate in collaborative activities designed to build connections, support academic growth, and promote social-emotional learning.
The Golden Tornado Scholastic Foundation, Inc.'s 22nd annual Fine Arts & Beyond (FAB) Showcase was a great success. The student artwork was incredible and the student musical performances were outstanding. Thank you to everyone who helped make the event a success!
Broad Street Elementary School scholars are learning that giving is a vital part of a holistic education and key to becoming well-rounded individuals. Recently, they were invited to support Joey’s Paw, a local organization that raises funds to provide mobility devices and prosthetic limbs for disabled animals.
Miss Diane Lynch created and shared fun activities with Broad Street scholars during Read Across America Week.
Each day she read the book of the day to scholars in kindergarten through third grade. After the book reading, she led an activity based on the book of the day. Scholars even had the chance to win one of the featured books.

Broad Street Elementary School's second grade scholars took Kindness Week by storm!
Both second grade classes collaborated in order to spread some positivity throughout the halls of BSES. From interactive bulletin boards, to daily "Kindness Challenges" coming over the announcements, these scholars made it a point to show their peers some love and represent the true beating heart of their school.
Even during the chill of winter, Broad Street Elementary School scholars remain dedicated to gardening and growing fresh produce.

Second grade scholars at Broad Street Elementary School have been learning all about economics. And, last Friday, they were given the opportunity to be producers and hold a school-wide lemonade stand!
Thank you for your flexibility this winter. I know the cancellation of school and/or the shift to remote instruction is not easy for families. As you know, we closed school due to inclement weather on January 3, 2025. The make-up day for January 3 is scheduled for Friday, March 21, 2025.
Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro issued a Proclamation to proclaim February 3-7 School Counseling Week.

Second grade scholars from Broad Street Elementary School recently visited the Butler Eagle to learn about local journalism. It was a great opportunity for scholars to learn about a career path that connects to our English language arts curriculum.
The Butler Rock Orchestra rocked three exciting shows for elementary students in December! They visited Northwest, McQuistion, and Broad Street Elementary playing hits by the Trans-Siberian Orchestra. Students got to learn about different instruments, how to be a conductor, and even try playing an instrument themselves!
Broad Street Elementary School's Light Up Night with Officer Jim and our Broad Street Elves was a magical event. More than 500 people experienced the Christmas joy at spectacular holiday event!

We hope you and your family had a wonderful Thanksgiving. As we head back to school, we are preparing for the possibility of remote learning. There are a few important things we would like to share with you to help your family prepare for this possibility.
Broad Street Elementary School (BSES) came together to celebrate Officer Jim winning the Pennsylvania RISE Award. Officer Jim, who serves as the School Police Officer for the K-5 building, is a pillar of the school community.
The ceremony began with an amazing performance by the Butler High School Rock Orchestra, led by Mrs. Katie Black, setting the stage for the heartfelt program.
Each year I like to remind our families of our Winter Weather Plan.
I make the decision to delay or cancel school after I review the weather forecast and consult with our Transportation Department. When necessary, the district also consults with the municipalities and other resources within our community. Each decision regarding whether or not to delay or cancel school is made with student safety as the primary concern. I recognize that any delay or cancellation can create hardships for our families and do not take this decision lightly.
BSES Principal Boyd put out a call, and our incredible staff, scholars, families and community partners answered! Together, the Broad Street Elementary School community joined hands in solidarity at Rotary Park, which has now been adopted by BSES.
We are thrilled to announce that Officer Jim, Broad Street Elementary School’s School Police Officer, has been honored with the prestigious RISE (Recognizing Inspiring School Employees) Award! This award celebrates the dedication and excellence of non-teaching school employees who provide exceptional service to students.

Broad Street Elementary School after-school scholars recently had the opportunity to cast their vote using real election equipment. The scholars voted on who they would like the next professional speaker to be.
The votes are in, and the scholars decided they would love to have a veterinarian as the next speaker at Broad Street.

Broad Street Elementary families and staff recently gathered for a fun Fall Festival. A special thank you to Slippery Rock University for their help making this event a success!
Beginning in October 2024, all elementary schools will resume selling snacks and a la carte items for the new school year. All items sold meet the USDA’s Smart Snack Guidelines.

We have a few updates from our food service department that we would like to share with you.
This is a reminder that tick season is upon us. We encourage you to check your children for ticks or signs of a tick bite each day.
While we do not check students for ticks while they are at school, it is possible that a tick will be discovered. In that case, the school nurse will notify you if a tick is found on your student while they are at school.
The Butler Education Association (BEA) is organizing a food drive to support The Kids' Weekend Backpack Program!
Please bring a single serve non-perishable item to the Butler Golden Tornado Football game this Friday, September 20. Donations will go to the Kids’ Weekend Backpack Program.
I regret to inform you that we are canceling school today, Thursday, September 12, 2024. As you are aware from our communication yesterday, we initially received a vague threat targeting our secondary schools. After receiving reports from parents and students about additional threats, we determined that these mirrored threats made to other districts in the region, which were deemed not credible. Unfortunately, overnight we have received further threats.

Summer is still in full swing, but if you are looking ahead to the first day of school, here are a few things you can do now to be prepared!
Children need healthy meals to learn. Butler Area School District offers healthy meals every school day. Breakfast is available at no charge to students. Lunch costs $2.50 for Elementary Schools and $2.75 for Secondary Schools. Your child(ren) may qualify for free meals or for reduced price meals.
We are incredibly fortunate to live in a community that is committed to supporting our students and our schools.
There are many ways to get involved throughout the year. Please complete the form linked below to let us know if you are interested in volunteering or helping our students learn about a career. If you are willing to do both, please submit this form twice -- once for volunteering and once for career awareness support.

Broad Street Elementary School scholars participated in Remake Learning Days in May.
The Remake Learning Day Film Academy event allowed for a partnership with WQED Film Academy and Broad Street Elementary School. The scholars learned that a storyboard is a visual representation of film sequence and breaks down the action into individual panels. Next, they got to work creating their own storyboard. Many of Broad Street scholars hope to create their own movie one day. This exciting day also revealed that we have many talented writers and illustrators at BSES.
Scholars and their teachers also enjoyed remake learning time within their classroom. Below you will find details of the varied grade level activities.
